About the Fellowship

The Climate Feed Fellowship is part of Climate Feed, aย new initiative focused on helping reporters better understand and communicate the vital link between food and climate change. Led by Sonalie Figueiras, the founder and Editor in Chief of Green Queen Media, Climate Feed aims toย tackle the widespread lack of coverage in mainstream media about how our food choices impact the climate crisis.ย Our inaugural program, the Climate Feed Fellowship, aims to empower 6 emerging journalists with the tools and connections they need to fill this significant gap in coverage.

FAQs

Who can apply to the fellowship?

Any journalist (anywhere in the world and of any age) with less than five years of professional reporting experience. Proficiency in English is required.

How does the application process work?

You will start by submitting an article pitch, your writing portfolio and any relevant external links associated with your journalism (e.g. personal Substack/newsletter, Muckrack profile, X/Bluesky/Threads profile, personal blogs). Shortlisted applicants will then be invited for an interview with the Climate Feed team. Following final selection, successful fellows will receive a welcome packet and onboarding information by September 1st.

How many hours do I need to dedicate to the fellowship?

Fellows should expect to dedicate approximately 4-6 hours per week over the course of the program. This includes attending training workshops, participating in mentorship sessions, conducting research, writing, and editing.

How long is the fellowship program?

The program will run from September 2025 through December 2025, culminating in the publication of each of each of the fellows’ stories on the Green Queen website and across Green Queenโ€™s various channels on the Green Queen website and across Green Queenโ€™s various channels.

Is the fellowship paid?

Yes. Each fellow will receive a $1,000 USD stipend upon successful completion of the fellowship. In addition to financial support, the fellowship offers significant professional development, personalized mentoring, publication opportunities, and global exposure for emerging journalists.

Where will my work be published?

All fellows’ stories will be published on Green Queen Media’s digital news platform. Additionally, stories will be submitted to the Covering Climate Now Sharing Library, making them accessible for republication by a network of over 500 international news outlets.

What topics can I write about?

We welcome pitches on critical issues at the intersection of food systems and climate change, including:

  • Dietary change: shifting to plant-forward diets, the future of protein, behavior change for sustainability.
  • The future of food: transitioning towards plant-rich diets towards plant-rich diets, climate-resilient agriculture, tackling food waste, and adapting farming systems.
  • Food justice and health: global food security, food inequity, indigenous food solutions, and the link between health and sustainable food systems.

What kind of training and support will I receive?

Fellows will receive:

  • A dedicated editor for story development.
  • Access to leading climate and food systems journalists through panels and Q&A through panels and Q&A.
  • Training workshops on climate reporting, investigative journalism, ethical storytelling, data journalism, and more.
  • Access to Climate Feed research, expert panels, and the Covering Climate Now network.
  • Promotion support through Green Queen’s media and social channels.
